The Delta Heritage Project is a collection of photographs, news clippings, and other biographical materials relating to the history of African Americans in the Mahoning Valley, dating from the mid-19th to early 21st century. This collection was first compiled by the Delta Lambda chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority in February 1999. The purpose of the project was to “preserve local history and inspire our youth and community into turning obstacles into stepping stones.” The vision of the sorors is explained in greater depth by the pamphlet distributed by the sorority to request contributions from members of the community.
The collection was digitized by the Archives and special Collections of Maag Library in 2008 and uploaded to the university’s institutional repository. In order to further foster access to these records, this website will serve as a front-end to the collection, contextualizing the items, arranging them into groups, and providing additional sources of information where available.
