Birdie Welcher
Birdie Welcher was born in Kentucky and came to Youngstown at a young age. Throughout her life Welcher was active in community service, serving as Assistant Director of Caldwell Settlement House and first President of the Thorn Hill PTA. Chief amongst her accomplishments was the establishment of the McGuffey Centre in 1940. In addition to being a founder, Mrs. Welcher would also guide the Centre through its early years, serving as executive director and director of recreational activities.
